You need to downgrade your firmware to play downloaded games, they run off your memory stick
so you definitely need to downgrade your firmware to a custom one like Dark Alex (IE: Team M33)
If it's an older PHAT PSP you just need the right files, if it's a new PHAT or PSP SLIM Model it will
require a Magic Memory Stick and a Pandora battery either you buy or create yourself. I suggest
you look into the sites that specialize in all of the above and start digging around for info / files /
    guides etc:

    http://pspupdates.qj.net/
    http://www.dark-alex.org/
    http://www.calo-hacks.com/index.html
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/

Basicly everything you require available at above sites but be prepared for some
    research, trial and error etc.

Ok have just started to look into this again and have found they sell slim 'pandorized' batteries.

So does that mean no altering the Firmware/flashing it etc?

All that battery does is put the PSP into SERVICE mode, this used to boot a magic memory stick (a memory stick with the appropiate files) which will allow you to flash the firmware to a usable hacked firmeware for the use of Emulators/game ISO's etc. HOWEVER a pandora battery is really only needed to recover bricked PSP's (IE: PSP's that had a firmware upgrade go bad) if there is nothing wrong with your PSP you only need to flash your firmware, I think you need to do more research and this subject..................
