I get my cases from MircoCenter and they're pretty much a standard size. I found that sizing the covers to 10.875" x 7.375" pretty much fills the space inside the clear cover.
For anyone who wants a template (I hope this is the right spot), I created a JPG in PhotoStudio the fits standard cases. BAsically, I took a scanned cover and selected each side, front, spine, back, in turn and then used the Fill tool to set a unique color. When I need to create a custom cover or replace one side or another with a better pic, I use the template. I also set a document in WOrd so I can print the covers from there without needing special cover design software. Just format the pic to the above sizes, selecte the right paper & resolution, and print away.
