ABBY (1974) Apparently this has been hard to see since WB sued, saying it was a ripoff of THE EXORCIST. Well, duh. I don't know if it's worth a lot of sweat to track down, but it's not too bad. It is what it is, a ripoff of THE EXORCIST, but given that it's a good job of it. William Marshall is quite commanding in the Max Von Sydow/Father Merrin role, and Carol Speed actually runs a thin edge of hysteria nicely in spots. SORT OF SPOILERS Also they ring some interesting changes with the subtext. Here it's not so much why are the kids who used to love you now calling you names and spitting at you; it's more why is your wife who used to love you now spitting at you and getting overly friendly with the other guys at the church. The demon here is strictly seen as a demon of sexuality, and if you were so inclined you could even read the movie as a guy's attempt to make sense of the sexual liberation years. The best scene in the flick, no joke, is none of the horror stuff -- it's when the husband and the brother are going from dive bar to dive bar sadly trying to find demon possessed Abby, who's been slutting around town. Clearly someone in that production found THAT prospect pretty frightening.
